The Comfort of a Meal at Home

For Anna, the saying “home is where the heart is” rings true. At 105 years young, she currently lives in the house that she and her husband bought 61 years ago.

In her home today, Anna is surrounded by mementos of her loving, challenging, beautiful life. Countless photos hang on the walls of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. An old radio cabinet sits waiting to be played — Anna’s husband loved to dance. It’s clear to see how much love Anna has to give, and how loved she is.

“My story is like hundreds (of people’s),” Anna says today, reflecting. “But mine turned out just like I wanted.”

She hasn’t always called Buffalo home. In fact, Anna was born in Austria in 1920. She and her husband were raising a daughter there, but her husband tragically lost his life in WWII.

After a significant period of grief and healing, Anna moved to Buffalo in 1959 with her daughter, second husband and their newborn son. They had just $48 to their name, but endless hope in their hearts.

Here, Anna and her family created a new life. She cared for them tirelessly, running the household and sewing items like bedding, curtains and clothes from scratch, showing her love and demonstrating her love of sewing.

She cared for her community, too. Anna loves to bake, especially her famous poppyseed cake, which she often delivered to neighbors and friends.

As Anna reached her golden years, and her children, then grandchildren, grew up, she never slowed down. After her second husband passed away, Anna learned to drive at 60 years old.

Anna doesn’t drive anymore and she doesn’t bake as much, either. But she still eats plenty of wholesome, nourishing meals, and that’s because she receives a home-delivered meal from FeedMore WNY three days each week.

Anna loves the dishes that volunteers bring and never lets any bite go to waste.

FeedMore WNY’s Home-Delivered Meals Program helps ensure that Anna, and many Western New York seniors, can continue to live in their memory-filled homes and continue to thrive.

After so many years of caring for family, friends and neighbors, Anna is touched by the care that volunteers and supporters offer through a warm, home-delivered meal. She’s happy to share stories with any volunteer who visits — most recently, that means news of her great-grandson, who just got married!

For Anna, home isn’t just where the heart is — it’s where full plates are, too.
