Jonah’s story
Jonah’s life story is rooted in resilience, shaped by connection, and guided by a deep commitment to his community.
At 18, Jonah faced housing instability after being forced to leave his family home. Following a period without a stable place to live, he found his way to Genesis House, a partner agency of FeedMore WNY’s hunger relief network.
Shared meals are a central part of daily life at Genesis House, and food is supplemented by FeedMore WNY. Every person staying at the shelter participates in cooking, serving, and cleaning up after meals. Jonah embraced these routines and the sense of shared responsibility they fostered.
Jonah also demonstrated compassion for fellow guests and worked alongside staff to help create a caring, supportive environment. Staff recognized Jonah’s potential and advocated to bring him on as staff.
That opportunity opened new chapters in Jonah’s life. He met and married his husband, who also works at the shelter, and together they have their own apartment where they are raising their 2-year-old son.
Now 24, Jonah is working toward a degree in social work. “I felt called by my own experience,” he says, reflecting on his path.
Jonah is also a graduate of Cattaraugus Leadership Network — using his voice, experience, and leadership to help strengthen stability and build hope.
