A Life Dedicated to Hope and Service

From sweeping floors in a neighborhood barbershop to leading boards and building pathways for his neighbors, Lamont Williams lives his life turning opportunity into action.

A U.S. Navy veteran, a man of deep faith and a triple-degree alumnus of the University at Buffalo, he has dedicated more than three decades to strengthening individuals, organizations and communities across Western New York.

“We have a responsibility to stand up, come forward and help other folks.”

Lamont’s understanding of generosity began at home. After his parents divorced when he was nine, he moved with his mother and younger brother into the lower flat of his grandmother’s Buffalo double. She lived upstairs, tending a backyard garden and sharing what she had — fresh produce, groceries and meals — with anyone who needed them.

“We didn’t have much, but I never thought that we were poor.”

Just down the street, a barbershop offered another early lesson. Lamont swept floors and watched as the owner rented chairs to other barbers, creating opportunity for them to build their own businesses.

Inspired by that model, Lamont launched his own business incubator at 21. The Utica Business Center continues to help entrepreneurs start and grow their ideas today.

That same commitment to opportunity has guided Lamont’s community leadership. He currently serves as chair of the FeedMore WNY Board of Directors and has contributed to numerous organizations across Buffalo. He was also appointed to represent the City of Buffalo for the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park and supports initiatives such as United Way, Buffalo Promise Neighborhood and Read to Succeed.

Lamont credits Brenda McDuffie for encouraging him to enter human services, leading to his work with the Buffalo Urban League, where he coordinated education and youth programs and organized the National Urban League Youth Summit.

Troubled by low high school graduation rates, Lamont helped bring the Hillside Work Scholarship Connection to Buffalo in 2012, providing mentorship, job training and scholarships to support student success.

“By providing kids with what they need to succeed in school today, we’re not only ensuring their futures, but helping the generation that comes after them.”

At FeedMore WNY, Lamont leads by example — whether greeting guests, thanking donors or volunteering at food drives. As board chair, he brings thoughtful leadership and creativity, even coming up with the name for FeedMore’s commissary service, Hearty Helpings.

When asked if there is an underlying theme to what drives him, Lamont says, “We have a responsibility to stand up, come forward, and help other folks.”

Lamont continues to build opportunity and strengthen community, living a life defined by compassion, leadership and lasting impact. He does all of this because he knows it’s essential to show individuals that there’s reason to have hope.
