Looking Back on Hunger Action Month

FeedMore WNY participated in several events in September as part of Hunger Action Month: a national campaign spearheaded by Feeding America to raise awareness of food insecurity and inspire action to alleviate hunger in the United States. These events helped raise awareness of our mission, collect food and funds for our neighbors in need, and helped boost our ability to help clients throughout Western New York.

Hunger Action Month kicked off with the donation of 36,000 pounds of food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on September 10, 2026. The donation came to FeedMore WNY as part of the church’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

The truckload of food coming to FeedMore WNY was one of 250 such donations given by the church to food banks across the country.

The very next day volunteers came to our Holt Street warehouse and packed 250 emergency food kits in honor of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The kits were handed out on Sept. 25 at the Buffalo VA Stand Down event, which benefited veterans and their families who were homeless or at risk of homelessness.

September 15 saw the donation of a new refrigerated truck thanks to our partnership with Penske Truck Leasing, the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation and Feeding America. The new, 26-foot refrigerated truck is one of seven donated by the two organizations this year and will help us get more perishable and nonperishable food out to our partner agencies throughout our four-county coverage area.

Our biggest event this Hunger Action Month was Huddle for Hunger, our yearly collaboration with the Buffalo Bills Foundation and Wegmans. Thanks to the generous support from our community and corporate partners, we raised 66,723 pounds of food in the parking lot of the new Highmark Stadium.

We were joined by several Buffalo Bills players, including offensive tackle and frequent FeedMore WNY supporter Dion Dawkins.

Hunger Action Month concluded on Sept. 30 when the Niagara Parks Commission lit up Niagara Falls orange for the occasion.

Hunger Action Month is over but our mission to fight food insecurity in Western New York continues. Thanks to our staff, volunteers, donors, partner agencies and supporters throughout the community, FeedMore WNY helps our neighbors in need year-round.
